Crafts for Cancer 2013

Pink Lady® & Tru-Cape Crafts for Cancer 2013, 19 October

This year’s fund-raising initiative for the Tygerberg Hospital’s Breast Clinic Transport Project was held at D’Aria Winery in Durbanville. Tygerberg Hospital’s Breast Clinic diagnose on average 30 women per month with breast cancer. About 21 of these women are from the lower income bracket and although government covers their treatment costs, they still can’t afford getting to and from hospital for vital treatment. 2010 saw the very first Pink Lady® Crafts for Cancer workshop, and since then it as been an annual event.

This year I was fortunate enough to be given a ticket to this event by a dear friend. The theme this year was: ‘Today I remember to be grateful’. The craft workshop was presented by Ciskia Hanekom of Ideas/Idees Magazine. Ciskia guided us through the steps of Japanese book binding as we created our very own Gratitude Journal.

Time flew by and before we knew it, it was time to pack up our tools and head for the beautifully laid out lunch tables. Theresa Richards, TopFruit’s Marketing Consultant, did the acknowledgements and introduced us to Professor Justus Apffelstaedt, Head of the Breast Clinic at Tygerberg Hospital. Prof. Apffelstaedt gave us a very insightful talk about genetic testing for the cancer gene.

The delectable soup starter set the tone for the treat our taste buds were in for. If this was not heavenly enough, the award-winning instrumental pop group Sterling eQ treated us to a magical performance while awaiting our main course. Again the chefs at D’Aria titillated our taste buds, kudos to them!

While we let our food settle we sauntered out onto the tranquil lawns of D’Aria for the official group photo. Soon though, like bees to honey, we headed back inside for the promise of dessert. Judging by the soup and main course, we knew it had to be something extraordinary. Prof. Apffelstaedt made himself available for one on one questions while we waiting on dessert.

True to form, dessert was out of this world delicious! The lightest, most perfect cheesecake I’ve ever come across, topped of course with Pink Lady® apples. I can still taste and feel it melting in my mouth, just heavenly.

This year R21250 were raised for the Tygerberg Hospital Breast Clinic Transport Project. Don’t miss out on next year’s event, contact Theresa now (therichards[at]telkomsa.net) and be first to book your seat.
